“I’d probably have to say I’d trust Ty K the most with my homework but I’m not sure.”
Pat Assinger had never played Ultimate before coming to Pitt. In fact, he didn’t even know it was a “thing.” The sport is basically non-existent in his hometown, and his first experience was when he played with some friends in pick-up games.
Once he got to Pitt, he found himself playing consistently with the Pitt guys and actually enjoying himself.
“The guys on the team were really welcoming,” Assinger said. “It was a great atmosphere.”
Despite being a completely raw rookie, the team embraced Pat and helped him hone his skill. By the time Pitt Ultimate’s annual 3v3 tournament rolled around, Assinger was so embedded in The Program, so hungry to make the team that he pushed himself too far.
It was on a hot day in September, and Assinger found himself on a 3-man team with no substitutes. After realizing he was breaking down, and also realizing the team’s veteran player who is usually in charge wasn’t present, Assinger asked the opposing team’s vet if they could take a timeout.
Little did he know the veteran he was asking was the take-no-prisoners, I ball till I crawl veteran Jay Boyle. Jay, or Dick, as he’s known amongst his loving teammates, refused to give Assinger the water break.
“Quit being so soft you punk!” is probably something like what he said.
So The Slayer, being the competitor that he is and hungry to make the team, decided to play through. About an hour later he was in the hospital with heat stroke and consequently didn’t play for the next few days.

Q: If you could be one super hero, who would it be?
A: If I could be one superhero I’d be superman because I’d love to be able to fly. And be that ripped.

Editor’s note: The nickname “The Slayer” is an ironic allusion to Assingers good-natured, well-intentioned personality.
